The Cherokee Parks and Recreation Department has announced the date for the annual Hershey Youth Track and Field Meet. This FREE meet will be held at George Hicks Field in Cherokee on Monday, April 26. Registration will begin at 5 p.m.,with the meet to begin at 5:45 p.m. This event is open to all area boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 years of age, and the children must be that age by December 31, 2010.
Casey's General Store will again be the local meet sponsor for this event, which is organized by the Cherokee Parks and Recreation Department. Casey's General Store sponsorship includes taking meet registration at area Casey's stores,and providing funds to pay for meet expenses such as ribbons, posters and postage.
The Parks and Recreation Department sincerely thanks the area Casey's stores for helping make this local meet possible.
Youths may enter three events - two track and one field, or one track and two field events. Events will include the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4 X 100 meter relay, standing long jump, and the softball throw.
Not all events are available for each age group. Boys and girls will compete separately, and the age groups are 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14 years of age. Youth enter according to the age they will be on December 31, 2010.
All first-place finishers qualify for the State Meet, which will be held in Marshalltown on June 12. Additionally, a number of Iowa youth qualify every year for an all-expense paid trip to the National Hershey Meet held in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Participants must fill out and mail a special entry form that is available at the Parks and Recreation Office, school offices, or any of the Casey's General Stores located in Cherokee, Aurelia, Alta, Marcus, and Paullina. Registration deadline is Monday, April 19.
FUTURE TRACKSTERS RACES. All 7 and 8 year olds are invited to run in special races for kids not old enough for the Hershey meet. We will have the 50 meter dash and the 100 meter dash. No registration is necessary.
FREE HERSHEY CANDY BARS FOR ALL TRACKSTERS. All kids participating will receive a free Hershey candy bar, courtesy of HyVee Drugstore!
