Izabela Clark was your average toddler. She was learning to talk and feed herself. She also loves reading, puzzles, playing with blocks and keeping her parents busy.
Her parents, Cory, a Quimby native, and Katie Clark of Sioux City, are not the type to run to the doctor after every cough, sneeze or bad night's sleep. Shortly after Izabela's second birthday on Jan. 22 she began to limp and complain of pain in her right leg.
At first her parents were not all that concerned and thought she had slept on it wrong or it was growing pains. The next week they took her to their doctor thinking she had a bladder infection which they treated for after tests showed high white blood cell counts in her urine.
When she continued to limp and began avoiding using her leg they took her to the doctor again which began a long list of tests, referrals and appointments.
They had multiple X-rays done, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and lots of blood work. On March 19 they were referred to Children's Hospital in Omaha. After a bone biopsy they were told that Izabela had a tumor and there would have to be more tests, but most likely it was cancer.
After more blood work they got the word that it was Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.).
A.L.L. is the most common cancer in small children and the treatment has a high success rate. On March 22 the Clarks started chemotherapy treatment. Izzy will have at least four weeks of intense treatment and maintenance treatment following that.
