Aurelia School/Community Reunion scheduled for July

Thursday, April 15, 2010

AURELIA - Every five years, the community of Aurelia celebrates its proud heritage with a weekend full of fun and reminiscing at the All-School/Community Reunion, and that time is coming again this summer on July 16-17.

The fun this year will begin with two dances on Friday night (July 16). Charles Wharton has graciously offered to provide a band to play "big band era" music for a dance at the Aurelia Community Center, beginning at 7 p.m.

Aurelia graduate Tony Bohnenkamp will be providing music from the later "rock and roll era" at another Friday night dance - this one at the Aurelia Golf Club, starting between 8:30 and 9 p.m.

Saturday 's scheduled activities start bright and early, with a community breakfast to be served at the Aurelia Community Center from 7:30 - 9 a.m.

For those more inclined to start their day with exercise, there will be a fun run/walk/bicycle ride Saturday morning at 8 a.m. behind the Aurelia school.

Inside the school, there will be an Open House beginning at 9:30 a.m. and running until 1:30 p.m. Be sure to sign in in the school gym. During this time, you can tour the school facilities and spend some time visiting and renewing old friendships. Refreshments will also be available.

Saturday morning is packed with activities, because there will also be a parade downtown, starting at 10 a.m. Line up for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m., and all classes, organizations or families who would like to have an entry in the parade are encouraged to do so. Just let committee members know (however, they note that they will accept late entries as well).

Lunch will be served at the Aurelia Community Center from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

For anyone who is looking for something else to do while they are in town, you are encouraged to see what the Main Street businesses, many of which are owned and operated by Aurelia alumni, have to offer. Also be sure to visit the Heritage Center/Museum at 228 Main Street and the Heritage House (the first home in Aurelia) at 404 Main Street.

The Community Center will again be the site of a community meal at 5 p.m., with the members of the Aurelia Fire Department serving. At 8 p.m., the annual Fireman's Ball will begin, with music this year being provided by Iowa Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famers the Magnificent Board of Directors.

If anyone is interested in golfing that weekend, you are asked to please call the clubhouse (712-434-5498) for rates. The Aurelia Swimming Pool will also be open that weekend, weather permitting.

Reunion Committee members include Nancy Webb (nancywebb@iw.net), Paula Weathers (whizard@newulmtel.net), Sue Jones (suejones@heritageiowa.com), Jan Buenger, Ardelle Staver, Sandy Beals, Julia Meinking, Linda Severson, LeAnn Patton, Reggie Kelley and Amy Rohwer.

Please contact committee members or check the Aurelia web site, www.aureliaia.com, for any updates or new developments. Committee members hope that as many Aurelians as possible - past and present- plan their vacation around this weekend, and hope to see you all there.
