For Cherokee, Paige Stieneke (trombone) andJacob Lewis (trumpet) received Class 2A Outstanding Soloist Awards, and Lewis also was named one of the four best Outstanding Soloists in 2A.

Lewis and MMC's Emily Bush (piano) also were recognized for their participation in the Iowa All-State Jazz Band.

"At some point during the year in open competition, we beat every band chosen ahead of us," said McEntaffer. "The judging is all in the adjudicator's interpretation. You just have to prepare best you can and go out and perform your best that day, and then see where you end up."
