Le Mars sweeps WHS tennis girls

Visiting Le Mars swept the youthful Cherokee Washington High girls tennis team 9-0 in season-opening Lakes Conference action here Monday night.

In varsity singles for Cherokee, Demi Dunn lost 10-3 to Natalie Miller at #1, Amanda Kohn lost 10-0 to Erica Westoff at #2, Denise Freed fell 10-2 to Carolyn Ahlers at #3, Sanna Miller lost 10-1 to Molly Fischer at #4, Sarah Ruehle fell 10-7 to Sammie Weidauer at #5, and Amber Haupert lost 10-0 to Catie Meis at #6.

In varsity doubles, Dunn and Kohn lost 10-1 to Miller and Westoff ay #1, Freed and Haupert lost 10-1 to Ahlers and Fischer at #2, and Miller and Ruehle lost 10-4 to Stephanie Young and Meis at #3.

Le Mars also swept the JV matches 9-0.

In JV singles action for Cherokee, Taylor Meyerhofer lost 8-1 at #1, Paige Stieneke lost 8-2 at #2, Shelby Bingham lost 8-3 at #3, Brianna Fowler lost 8-2 at #4, Hanna Henson lost 8-3 at #5, and Amber Schwarz lost 8-0 at #6.

In JV doubles, Meyerhofer and Stieneke lost 8-1 at #1, Bingham and Fowler lost 8-2 at #2, and Henson and Schwarz lost 8-0 at #3.

"Sarah and Hanna played their first matches ever and they show great promise," said first-year Cherokee coach Tricia Koster. "Demi and Amanda played hard in singles and doubles and just couldn't get the points to fall their way.

"Sarah played very well in her hard-fought match, and Sanna and Sarah had some good rallies and played hard in doubles."
