LE MARS - The Cherokee Braves golf team opened its season with a sweet performance to claim a Lakes Conference boys triangular, carding a 171, to runner-up Le Mars's 175, and Spirit Lake's 195.
Matt Weeks of Spirit Lake was medalist with a 39, and Cherokee's Matt Pitts was runner-up with a 41.
Other low medal scores for the Braves were Paxton O'Connor 42, Adam Pitts 43, and Brock Benson 45. Also for Cherokee, Austin Winchell scored 50, and Austin Mongan 53.
Tanner Dowling was low for host Le Mars with a 42.
In JV action, Le Mars won after carding a 195, followed by Cherokee 236, and Spirit Lake 260.
Eric Cline was JV medalist for Le Mars with a 46.
For Cherokee JV, Devin Mongan led with a 56, followed by Zac Anderson 58, Eric Wilkie 61, Gabe Conley 61, Casey Godfrey 67, and Andrew Zarr 71.
"It was a challenging day to play golf," said Cherokee coach James DeVos. "The temperatures were nice, but that wind made it difficult to hit every type of shot, including putts. I was proud of our boys as they battled through the conditions to pick up the conference wins. Matt shot a great round."
The Braves play in the Spencer Invitational Saturday.
