Now in its second year, the Stillwater Marathon in Stillwater, Minnesota offers a great experience for runners and spectators alike.
The race is held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, and runners are treated to a course that takes them along the St. Croix river, through historic downtown Stillwater, past Victorian mansions built by lumber barons, and through the rolling river valleys that surround the town.
It is the only marathon in the Midwest to be sponsored by Dick's Sporting Goods National Runners Month. Dick's Sporting Goods was selected by the Michael J. Fox Foundation's Team Fox program as its official charity partner and beneficiary, raising awareness and funds to find a cure for Parkinson's disease. Dick's Sporting Goods has pledged to donate at least $50,000 to Team Fox.
Runners of all abilities can participate in Marathon weekend activities -- in addition to the full marathon there will also be a 12K race, 20-mile, and a half-marathon. Event organizers have also included a 2.62-mile "mini -marathon" for beginning runners or walkers who want to be part of the event.
