Two area High School alums who are now competing for Morningside College were participants in relay teams which cracked existing school marks when they ran at the renowned Drake Relays in Des Moines on Friday.
John Harris, a freshman from Holstein, who competed for Galva-Holstein High School, ran the third leg on the Mustangs' 3200 Meter Relay team, which finished sixth in a time of 7:43.52, a fraction of a second behind fifth place University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The quartet of Taylor Chapman, Brian Gesink, Harris and Monte Larson, who are all underclassmen, broke the 22-year-old school record time of 7:44.32.
Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, ran the opening leg of the Mustang women's Distance Medley Relay, which finished ninth, but shattered the school record of 12:21.57 - set last year - with their time of 12:18.26. Deidre Hinkeldey, a sophomore from Alta, followed Nelson on the second leg of the relay, before Jessica Hudelson and Erin Keitges finished up.
