The beauty of a well-run track and field meet on a superb all-weather track in perfect weather conditions was never more evident than at Tuesday's Cherokee Co-ed Relays, featuring a tidy eight teams in each the boys and girls divisions.

The Cherokee Braves finshed seventh in the rugged field, claiming one first-place finish, two seconds, and two thirds.

A talented and deep Le Mars squad won the boys team title with 108 points, followed by Storm Lake 90, Orange City Unity Christian 81, MOC-Floyd Valley 62, Hull Western Christian 61, Spencer 55, Cherokee 53, and Sheldon 48.

Snagging Cherokee's first-place finish was Kyle Schuck with a 19-2 1/2 long jump. Schuck was third in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.92.

The Braves second-place finishes went to Cody Stowater's 45-8 1/2 shot put throw, and Marc Husman's 52.09 clocking in the 400 meters. Brock Dagel claimed the other Cherokee third-place finish with a 123-3 discus throw.

Jon Hunt was fourth in the discus for the Braves with a 122-10 effort, and the Cherokee medley relay of Nolan Sampson, Jeremy Werthman, Sam Hinkhouse, and Husman was fourth in a time of 3:49.26.

Sampson placed fifth in the high jump with a 5-10 leap, and Eamon Adamson was fifth in the 1600 meters in 5:00.61. Cherokee's shuttle hurdle relay also was fifth in 1:06.09, with Schuck, Sampson, Jakob Hummel, and Werthman aboard.

The Braves 4x100 relay of Hinkhouse, Husman, Werthman, and Sampson was sixth in a time of 47.0.

For Cherokee in the girls competition, Taylor Woods was third in the shot put with a 34-7 1/2 heave, and fifth in the discus with a throw of 92-9.

Lauren Husman was third in the 400 meters in a personal best 1:03.44, fifth in the 200 meters in 28.17, and sixth in the long jump with a leap of 15-4 1/4.

Megan Carslon was third in the 800 meters in a season's best 2:33.

Storm Lake won the girls team competition with 117 points, followed by MOC-FV 111, Spencer 106, HWC 87, UC 80, Carroll 36, Sheldon 28, Cherokee 23.

"We has some great performances by three individuals," said Cherokee coach Jolene Hultgren. "We had some runners back tonight that had been absent, so it was great to get them involved in several events."
