SLSM's Yak is triple winner at Alta

Friday, April 30, 2010

The first of three wins - Storm Lake St. Mary's supreme distance runner Paul Yak (left) starts on the "gun lap" on his winning 3000 meter effort at Alta Tuesday. Aurelia sophomore Evan Laursen (right), running the event for the first time, did well - though the appearance in this photo is deceiving, as Yak is actually a lap ahead of the Bulldog runner. Yak later added the 800 and 1500 meter titles for a "triple crown" afternoon.
ALTA - Storm Lake St. Mary's Paul Yak accomplished the difficult feat of winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 Meter Runs on Tuesday at the Alta Invitational Boys Track Meet. Yak won the 800 in a time of 2:09.63, the 1600 in 4:48.00, and the 3200 in a record time of 10:11.55.

Several Chronicle Times teams were also in the field Tuesday, and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's Blake Erdman was also a winner, as he took the 100 meters in a time of 11.70. River Valley's Sam Lundt was a close third in 11.72, the same time given to Newell-Fonda's Blake Jesse, who finished second. MMC's Will Hansen was fifth, in a time of 11.98. Hansen easily won his specialty, the 110 meter high hurdles, in a time of 15.13. He also finished second to River Valley's Ryan Ketelsen in the 400 meter hurdles, with Ketelsen turning in a time of 58.54 to Hansen's 58.94. Ketelsen also finished third in the 110 High Hurdles, in a time of 16.79.

MMC's Jay Welp finished second in the 400 meters with his time of 53.03 and also finished fifth in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:15.76.
