SPENCER - The young, improving Cherokee Washington High girls track and field team notched three first-place finishes and two seconds at the Spencer Girls Track & Field Special here Friday night.
Taylor Woods won the shot put with a personal best 35-5 throw, and was second in the discus with a throw of 91-6. Shelby Bush p;laced fourth in the discus with an 82-8 effort.
Lauren Husman won the long jump with a leap of 14-10 1/2, and was second in the 400 meters in 1:04.52. Husman also was fourth in the 200 meters in a time of 30.16.
Cherokee's 4x800 relay team of Yesenia Castro, Megan Hummel, Jackie Wilson, and Megan Carlson won first place with a season-best 11:07.17 clocking.
Carlson also placed third in the 1500 meters in a time of 5:46.20.
Other individual placings for the WHS gals were Jackie Wilson sixth in the high jump with a 4-2 effort, and Samantha Hirschman sixth in the 1500 in a personal best time of 6:00.83.
Cherokee's distance medley relay was fifth in 5:21.13, with Paige Reinert, Katy Hart, Katie Bice, and Hirschman aboard; the 4x400 relay of Husman, Carlson, Wilson, and Castro was fifth in 4:45.79; and the sprint medley relay of Reinert, Hart, Bice, and Hummel was sixth in 2:16.99.
"We had some great performances with several season and personal bests," noted Cherokee coach Jolene Hultgren. "Every girls on the team came home with at least one medal and several earned more than one medal.
"I have to commend the girls for their competitiveness and also that they are continuing to show improvement in their events as we get closer to Districts."
The Cherokee girls compete in the South O'Brien Co-ed Track & Field Meet in Cherokee Friday night.
