Children's Library Corner

I'd like to thank Terri from AES in Alta for coming to the library last week and doing a program on wind generators in our area. The adults and the youth enjoyed hearing about the history of the generators and had lots of questions for Terri. Several youngsters got to try on the harness, the hard hat, and hold the enormous wrenches used to install and repair the generators.

The library has more programs in the works.

What do you get when you mix kids, books, online literacy activities and PBS characters together? Family reading fun at the library!

The Cherokee Public Library and Iowa Public Television have joined forces to host a PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner. This special program gives children, ages 2-8, the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills through fun, engaging multi-media platforms.

The grand opening of the Cherokee Public Library's PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner will be Tuesday, May 11 @ 10:00 a.m. Dan Wardell, the energetic and enthusiastic host of IPTV Kids Clubhouse, will share information about the program and share a story or two. All are welcome to be among the first to see and experience this new interactive learning space.

The Cherokee Public Library was one of 50 chosen in Iowa to receive these national resources. The PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner will provide area kids and parents with new opportunities to read and engage through hands-on activities.

Parents, caregivers, teachers, and kids can all use these resources.

All activities-including self-directed worksheets, online videos, parent-led activities, and more-are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations, encompassing skills such as le5tter recognition, print awareness, and vocabulary instruction.

The initiative is part of Iowa Public Television's participation in the PBS KIDS Raising Readers campaign. This national literacy effort focuses on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care centers, and in the community.

For more information about the efforts at the Cherokee Public Library, contact Peg Wurth at 225-3498 or peg@cherokee.lib.ia.us. Not only is this going to be an exciting program, but it will be launched during Children's Book Week. So come and join in the fun.

While the library is excited about this new program, some of the regular programs will come to an end. The Youth in Action group will meet one last time before the end of the school year. The program will be Thursday, May 6th from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. Come have some fun with "A Minute to Win It" game and snacks.

The Terrific Toddlers group will meet Saturday, May 8 at 10:30 a.m. Children ages 1-3 bring a responsible person and join us for stories, finger plays, songs, and rhymes.

The After School Bunch will meet Tuesday, May 11 at 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. There will be stories, games, and snacks. Don't forget to ride bus #3 to the library. This will be our last program until next fall.

Home Schoolers will meet one last time for the school year on Wednesday, May 19 at 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Preschool Story Time will be every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The last Tuesday of the month will be the final story time until after the Summer Reading Program.

The Summer Reading Program, "Make a Splash @ Your Library" will begin July 2, 2010.

Mothers! Have a great Mother's Day!
