The hard-luck Cherokee Washington High girls varsity tennis team dropped a rain-shortened 5-1 Lakes Conference match to visiting Storm Lake here Tuesday night.

After losing 5-1 in the singles competition, the Cherokee girls had things going their way in two of the three doubles matches before rain halted the action.

In varsity singles for Cherokee, Demi Dunn beat Amanda Heimbrech 10-6 at #1, Denise Freed lost 10-4 to Amanda Kavan at #2, Amanda Kohn lost 10-1 to Samantha Kavan at #3, Sarah Ruehle lost 11-10 (7-5 tiebreaker) in a thrilling, exhausting match to Emily Deters at #4, Hillary Wilkie fell 10-2 to Iwa Chanthavong at #5, and Amber Haupert fell 10-6 to Brooke Gaffney at #6.

In #1 varsity doubles, Dunn and Kohn were tied at 8-8 with Helmbrech and Deters when rain stopped the play. Also, at #2 doubles for the WHS gals, Freed and Ruehle led 3-0 when rain stopped that match. At #3 doubles, Wilkie and Sanna Miller lost 10-6 to Chanthavong and Gaffney.

In JV action, Storm Lake won 8-1, with Emily Estala winning the lone Cherokee match with an 8-0 victory at #2 singles.

Also in JV singles, Taylor Meyerhofer lost 10-8 at #1, Paige Stieneke lost 8-0 at #3, Shelby Bingham lost 8-5 at #4, Brianna Fowler lost 8-0 at #5, and Hanna Henson lost 8-1 at #6.

In JV doubles, Meyerhofer and Stieneke lost 8-5 at #1, Haupert and Henson lost 8-4 at #2, and Bingham and Fowler lost 8-1 at #3.

"Demi had the lone varsity win for us," said first-year coach Tricia Koster. "Sarah player her heart out and did an amazing job. It was a heartbreaking loss."

The Cherokee girls play at Spirit Lake Park tonight.
