Braves send four events to State this week

South O'Brien qualified six events, Ridge View and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn five apiece, Cherokee four, and River Valley one for the 2010 Iowa State Boys Track & Field Championships Thursday through Saturday at Drake University Stadium in Des Moines.

Cherokee and Ridge View will compete in Class 2A, and MMC, SOS, and RV will compete in Class 1A at State. The State qualifiers emerged from Friday's District competition, the 2A hosted by Cherokee, and the 1A by Laurens-Marathon.

The Cherokee Braves making State included freshman Marc Husman in the 400 meters, senior Dan Bieber in the 800 meters, junior Brock Dagel in th shot put, and the Braves distance medley relay of Nolan Sampson, Kyle Schuck, Sam Hinkhouse, and Husman, with Bieber and Jakob Hummel serving as alternates.

Bieber battled a leg injury all season and just returned to the track for Friday's Districts.

Husman placed third in the District in 51.39 to post the 12th best 2A time in the State, Bieber was third at the District in 51.63 to post the 9th best time, and Dagel was third in Districts with a throw of 48-01/2 to post the 16th best distance. The distance medley relay was second in Districts in 3:41.83 for the 10th best time in the State.

State qualifiers for SOS included the 4x100 relay of Mike Faust, Jarod Syndergaard, Cole Ebel, and Dillon Zimmer timed in 44.56 for the 8th best time; the 4x200 relay comprised of that same foursome timed in 1:33.11 for the 9th best time; the 4x400 relay of Adam Paulsen, Faust, Syndergaard, and Zimmer timed in 3:33.15 for 14th best time; the 4x800 relay of Cole Pleggenkuhle, Andrew Koehlmoos, Nate Struve, and Paulsen timed in 8:28.98 for 13th best time; Pleggenkuhle's 2:05.98 time in the 800 meters for 16th best time; and Syndergaard's 20-8 3/4 long jump for 10th best distance.

MMC State qualifiers included Jay Welp in the 1600 meters in 4:34.40 for the 2nd best time in State, and his 10:25.46 time in the 3200 meters for the 10th best time; the shuttle hurdle relay of Blake Erdman, John Hoefling, Neal Bunt, and Finn Bode timed in 1:03.88 for the 17th best time; the distance medley relay of Bode, Hoefling, Bunt, and Welp timed in 3:40.71 for the 8th best time; and the Eagles 4x400 relay of Erdman, Bunt, Bode, and Welp timed in 3:33.91 for the 15th best time.

State qualifiers for Ridge View were Chris Bondinello with a 139-9 discus throw for 17th best in State, and his 49-0 1/2 shot put for 13th best in 2A; the 4x100 relay of Dillon Waters, Austin Graff, Dru Kenny, and Seth Johnson timed in 45.62 for 21st best; the 4x200 relay of Johnson, Kenny, Blake Woodke, and Colby Stephens timed in 1:33.75 for 21st best; and the Raptors distance medley relay of Johnson, Stephens, Trevor Irwin, and Kyle Newell timed in 3:42.36 for 13th best.

River Valley's Ryan Ketelson qualified for State with a 58.47 time in the 400-meter hurdles for 21st best in 1A.
