Donald E. O'Neal, 86, of El Reno, Oklahoma passed away on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, in Norman, Okla.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. It was Donald's wish to be cremated, and his remains will be buried in the Liberty Township Cemetery in rural Meriden. The Boothby Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Donald was born Jan. 12, 1923, to Ada and Henry O''Neal. He married Geneva Mahn on Dec. 12, 1945. Donald served in the U.S. Army-Air Force for nine years, including service in Europe during World War II. Following military service, he worked for the Sioux City Journal and Sioux City Public Schools.
After his retirement in 1985, Donald and Geneva enjoyed wintering in South Texas and spending time with friends from Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to El Reno in June 2006.
Don served as a leader of Troop 225 of the Boy Scouts of America for many years, and took special pride in the number of men who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout under his guidance.
Additionally he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Sioux City, Iowa (Morningside Lodge). Don was also an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva, of El Reno; a daughter, Connie Warren and her husband John of Yukon, Okla., a son, Tom and his wife Jan of Columbia, Mo.; a brother, Richard Mielke and his wife, Shirley of Newton; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
