Cherokee falls at E-LC in season finale

The Cherokee Washington High girls tennis team stayed busy recently, competing in first-round Regionals at Spencer Saturday, and closing out the Lakes Conference regular season with a trip to Estherville-LC Monday night.

Cherokee beat Spencer 5-3 in the opening Regional match, and then lost 5-1 to Sioux City Heelan.

Winning for Cherokee against Spencer were Demi Dunn 6-0, 6-1 at #1 singles; Denise Freed 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at #2; Amanda Kohn 6-4, 6-4 at #3; and Sarah Ruehle 6-2, 6-2 at #4. Hillary Wilkie lost 6-2, 6-4 at #5; and Sanna Miller lost 6-2, 6-3 at #6.

In doubles, Dunn and Kohn beat Spencer's duo 5-7, 6-2, 15-13 to give Cherokee the match.

Against Heelan, Dunn claimed the lone victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #1 singles.

"The girls played fantastic matches and put their all into each game," said Cherokee coach Tricia Koster. "I am very happy with how everyone played."

In the team's final match at Estherville-LC Monday night, the WHS gals lost 9-0.

In varsity singles for Cherokee, Dunn lost 11-10 in an 8-6 tiebreaker to Lexie Hash at #1, Freed lost 10-2 to Erin Olson at #2, Kohn lost 10-0 to Kaylene Vos at #3, Ruehle lost 10-0 to Emily Swalve at #4, Wilkie lost 10-5 to Kelsie McCauley at #5, and Miller lost 10-1 to Morgan Kirchner at #6.

In varsity doubles, Dunn and Kohn lost 10-3 to Olson and Vos at 31, Freed and Ruehle lost 10-3 to Hash and McCauley at #2, and Wilkie and Miller lost 10-6 to Holly Enerson and Liz Olson at #3.

In JV action for Cherokee, E-LC won 7-2. In JV singles, Amber Haupert lost 8-1 at #1, Taylor Meyerhofer fell 8-2 at #2, Emily Estala lost 8-3 at #3, Shelby Bingham lost 8-2 at #4, Mikaela Sandahl lost 8-4 at #5, and Brianna Fowler lost 8-1 at #6.

In JV doubles, Meyerhofer and Paige Stieneke lost 8-4 at #1, Haupert and Sandahl won 9-7 at #2, and Bringham and Fowler won 8-3 at #3.
