MMC leads area athletes at State

Iowa prep track & field meet nation's largest

DES MOINES - Cherokee area athletes fared well at last week's Iowa State Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn led the area continget, with the girls qualifying in seven events and the MMC boys in five in the Class 1A competition.

The MMC girls 4x100 relay placed 7th, with Jena Mittlestadt, Rachel McDermott, Ashley Schneider, and Erica Dreckman timed in 52.22; the 4x200 relay was fifth in 1:48.72 with Mittlestadt, Amanda Hoefling, Schneider, and Dreckman aboard; the sprint medley relay of Mittlestadt, McDermott, Schneider, and Dreckman was 11th in 1:54.4; the distance medley relay was 24th in 4:42.8 with McDermott, Carly Lehnhoff, Hoefling, and Sarah Bird running; the and 4x400 relay of Lehnhoff, Kayla Foresman, McDermott, and Hoefling was 24th in 4:31.8.

In addition, Dreckman placed 18th in the 100 meters in a time of 13.35, and Schneider was 19th in the 200 meters in 27.32.

Jay Welp led the MMC boys, placing 3rd in the 1600 meters in 4:27.57, and 5th in the 3200 meters in 9:50.23.

The Eagles shuttle hurdle relay of Blake Erdman, Neal Bunt, Finn Bode, and John Hoefling placed fourth in its heat but did not make finals after timing a 1:03.90. The 4x400 relay of Erdman, Bunt, Bode, and Welp placed fourth in its heat but did not make finals after dropping the baton between the first and second legs. MMC's distance medley relay of Bode, Hoefling, Bunt, and Welp did not make the finals.

For Cherokee in Class 2A, the boys distance medley was 23rd after a collision with Okoboji on the baton exchange knocked Sam Hinkhouse and the baton to the track and the Braves third leg Marc Husman had to stop and go back and retrieve the baton. Okoboji was disqualified for the infraction, but that did little to help the Braves move up.

Cherokee's Brock Dagel was 18th in the shot put with a 43-7 throw, and Taylor Woods was 12th in the shot put with a 34-11 effort in the rain. Husman finished 14th in the 400 meters in a time of 52.03, and Dan Bieber was 20th in the 800 meters in 2:02.65.

Lauren Husman, Marc's older sister, placed 11th in the long jump with a leap of 15-8 1/4, and was 20th in the 400 meters in 1:03.07.

The South O'Brien boys qualified in six events in 1A, with the 4x100 relay of Mike Faust, Jarod Syndergaard, Cole Ebel, and Dillon Zimmer placing 7th in 45.03; the 4x200 relay of that same foursome placing 8th in 1:33.33; the 4x400 relay of Adam Paulsen, Faust, Syndergaard, and Zimmer timed in 3:32.36 and did not make the finals; the 4x800 relay of Cole Pleggenkuhle, Andrew Koehlmoos, Nate Struve, and Paulsen placing 15th in 8:37.10; and Pleggenkuhle's 12th place finish in the 800 meters in 2:04.18.

For Ridge View boys in 2A, Christian Bondinello was 11th in the shot put with a 47-4 1/2 throw, and was 20th in the discus with a 129-8 effort. The Raptors placed 16th in the 4x200 relay with Seth Johnson, Dru Kenny, Blake Woodke, and Colby Stephens timed in 1:33.79; placed 16th in the distance medley with Johnson, Stephens, Trevor Irwin, and Kyle Newell timed in 3:42.14; and the 4x100 relay of Dillon Waters, Austin Graff, Kenny, and Johnson timed in 45.85 for 8th in their heat and did not make finals.

For the Ridge View girls, the distance medley relay of Rachel Anderson, Emily Schiernbeck, Roxanne Grundmeier, and Jessica Mathes was 5th in 4:16.70; Grundmeier was 4th in her heat in the 200 meters in 26.78 and didn not make finals.

Also in 1A, River Valley's Kari Ludvigson was 20th in the 800 meters in 2:32.97, and her teammate Brittny Shropshire was 8th in her heat of the 100 hurdles in 17.54 and did not make finals.

Aurelia's Audrey Winterhof was 7th in her heat of the 100 meters in 13.43 and did not make finals, and her teammate Ashley Anderson was 20th in the high jump with a leap of 4-10.
