Well, as of last weekend, summer has arrived in Northwest Iowa. Yes, I know it's only May and the "official" start of summer is still three weeks away.
But, I ask you - Were you here last weekend? 90 degrees with a hot, overpowering wind, high humidity and lots of flying pests spells summer to me, pal.
Anyone who's lived in these parts for very long knows that it's easy to miss both the spring and fall seasons if you blink.
So, bearing in mind that we may have an occasional lapse into spring- like weather or a day or two here and there, know that these days will just be an illusion, meant to lull us all into getting sunburned and bug-bitten because we've let our guard down.
With that in mind, everyone owes it to themselves to immediately stock up on suntan lotion, insect repellant, room or window fans and beer, lemonade, soda or iced tea ; make sure the air conditioning unit is working properly in your vehicle and/or home. Also make sure your shorts, tank top and swimsuit still fit and your sandals or flip-flops are wearable.
Then go out and enjoy yourself, take in an outdoor baseball or softball game, store up as many heat-related memories as you can to get you through next winter, and enjoy your favorite summer music, be it Gershwin's "Summertime (and the Livin' is Easy)," Roger Miller's "In the Summertime (You Don't Want My Love)," The Jamies' "Summertime Summertime (Sum-Sum-Summertime)," Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime," The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City," Connie Francis' "V-A-C-A-TION," or any one of a number of Beach Boys' tunes like "Girls On the Beach," "All Summer Long" or "Catch a Wave."
