The busy Cherokee Washington High softball team claimed one of three weekend games, falling 3-2 to Estherville-LC here Friday night, and then splitting two games at Saturday's Humboldt Tournament.
Shanon Shaefer took the hard-luck pitching loss against E-LC Friday night, allowing three runs on 13 hits and four walks, while striking out two in seven innings of work.
Four Cherokee players did most of the damage at the plate, with Jackie Wilson and Sarah Ruehle each 3-3, Megan Hummel 2-4 with an RBI, and Shanon Shaefer 2-3 with a double.
"We played a great game," noted Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck. "Jackie Wilson made some great catches in centerfield that kept us in the game."
Against Humboldt, Autumn Shaefer's two home runs and four RBI carried the WHS club to victory.
Cherokee clinched the game in the eighth when the International Tiebreaker went into effect with the teams tied at 6-6 after seven innings. Kaitlyn Miller, the last out in the 7th inning, started the frame on second base and Shanon Shaefer singled her in for a 7-6 lead and took second base on the throw to the plate. Shaefer then scored on two groundouts for the final margin.
Shanon Shaefer pitched six innings and allowed six hits and one run, with three walks and five Ks. Miller pitched two innings for Cherokee and gave up five runs on seven hits.
Besides Autumn Shaefer's two blasts, Wilson was 2-3 at the plate, Hummel 2-5 with a double and RBI, and Amanda Kohn 2-4 with a double and two RBI.
Cherokee tallied 11 hits and four walks off losing Humboldt pitcher Wetzel, who struck out two.
Miller started for Cherokee against Mason City and gave up eight earned runs on eight hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings. Shaefer relieved her and allowed three walks with one K in 1 1/3 innings of the abbreviated game.
Shanon Shaefer had her team's lone hit, a single.
Cherokee takes a 2-4 record to Hull Western Christian tonight, hosts Storm Lake Thursday night, and travels to Le Mars Friday night.
