76th annual Sioux Valley Am June 19-20

The 76th annual Sioux Valley Amateur Men's Match-Play Golf Tournament is ready to roll June 19 and 20 at the beautiful, pristine Cherokee Golf & Country Club.

The 18-hole Early Bird Qualifying begins Saturday, June 5 through Friday, June 11, and normal Qualifying commences Saturday, June 12 through Friday, June 18. The last Qualifying tee times are 1 p.m. June 18 for 18 holes, and 3 p.m. June 18 for nine holes.

The $75 entry fee includes 18-hole practice rounds and 18 holes of qualifying.

Iowa's oldest Match-Play Golf Tournament, the Sioux Valley Am has long been a favorite for amateur golfers throughout the Midwest, annually drawing between 250-300 qualifiers each year.

The format remains the time-honored same, with 16 golfers to a Flight and eight Flights, including Championship and First Flight playing 18-hole matches, and Flights 2-7 playing nine-hole matches.

All entrants failing to make the cut for the Sioux Valley Am automatically qualify for the Consolation Match-Play Tournament scheduled the following Saturday (June 26).

The medalist Award for Qualifiers is $300, in case of a tie, the criteria is first 9-hole match score. The Championship Flight winner gains a leg on the Frank Greenwood Memorial Trophy, which takes three legs to retire.

J.D Johnson of Des Moines is the defending 2009 Champion, also winning the Sioux Valley Am in 2007. Former Cherokean Jeff Campbell of Niles, Ohio is the 2008 Champion, and Todd Sapp of Sioux City won it in 2005 and 2006.

The popular Calcutta Auction and Meal will be Friday evening, June 18. Entertainment for that event will be Tony Bohnenkamp, an Aurelia native and professional musician. He will be sponsored by Hy-Vee.

Golfers making a hole-in-one on #4 during their first round of Match-Play action on June 19 will win a 2010 Chevy Camaro courtesy of Holzhauer Motors Ltd. of Cherokee, and a 2010 Yamaha Golf Cart courtesy of Yamaha Golf Equipment of Le Mars.

Coca-Cola and Chesterman Company sponsor a long drive contest, with a winner named in each Flight, and Royer's Jewelry of Cherokee will give away a Seiko Watch to closest to the pin on #8 during the Consolation Tournament.

Golfers and their friends and families also will be exposed for the first time to the new upscale "Chateau de Vue" Restaurant at the Cherokee Golf & Country Club operated by Hy-Vee. That full-menu facility will be in operation in early June.
