An estimated 5,000 fans attended last week's three-day Cherokee PRCA Rodeo at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds, with 2,100 in attendance at Saturday's night's annual most popular performance.
Cherokee Chamber of Commerce officials reported another greatly successful Rodeo, despite threatening weather all three days, with rains turning the arena into a muddy quagmire, but not raining during the performances, the many festivities, or the Parade.
Thousands of fans attended the big Rodeo Parade Saturday afternoon preceding the final rodeo performance, as the Parade merrily made its way on U.S. Highway 59 from Cherokee Washington High School to the Fairgrounds. There were 85 Parade entries this year.
Jared Kempker, Eugene, MO won the most money at the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo Thursday through Saturday, winning first in the calf roping to pocket $1460.15 after tying his calf in 9.3 seconds. Second in the calf roping was Tyler Thiel, Belle Fouche, SD $1208.40; third Matt Kenney, Onawa, IA $956.65; fourth Dustin Schrunk, Pender, NE $704.90. Places five and six were split between Jarrod Branch, Weatherford, OK and Jade Lyon, Meadow, SD, each winning $352.45.
Bareback riding saw Scott Montague, Rapid City, SD (WNFR qualifier) winning first on Bow Tie with a score of 83 points and claiming $1140. Second place was won by Ty Breuer, Mandan, ND $855; third place Jake Smith, Whitewood, SD $570; and fourth was split between Tanner Aus, Granite Falls, MN; Josh Shackleford, McGee, MO; and Jeremy Mouton, Scott, LA; each winning $95.
Wade Sundell, Boxholm, IA (WNFR qualifier) and Kaden Deal, Dupree, SD split in the saddle bronc riding, each winning $1143.32. Places 3-4-5-6 were split between JJ Elshere, Quinn, SD; Jesse Bail, Camp Crook,SD; & Tate Eck, Kindred, ND; each winning $413.96.
Many times WNFR qualifier Bobby Welsh, Gillette, WY won the bull riding with a score of 87 on Utah Fred, winning $1222.65. Second place was won by Clay Hindman, Belvidere, SD on Lead Story $926.25; third Shawn Coleman, Springfield, SD on T Box; fourth Dustin Elliott, North Platte, NE Cat's Meow; fifth Cole Hermanson American Desert; sixth Shawn Harris, Prairie City, SD on Hocus Pocus.
Of the six places paid the team roping, first was Casper May, Pryor, OK and Derrick Peterson, Stillwell, KS with a time of 5.9, each winning $1227.28
The top two money winners in the steer wrestling were Travis Hancock winning first and $1253.52, and second place went to Justin Morehouse, New Rose, IN, winning $1,037.40.
The WPRA girls barrel racing paid 10 places. The top five placings were first Sandi Brandli, Mauston, WI with a time of 15.77 winning $1241.89; second Tammy Whyte, Eau Claire,WI 15.84 $1064.47; third Melinda Mattson, Deadwood, SD 15.86 $887.06; fourth Jessic Routier, Buffalo, SD 15.92 $768,79; fifth Jesse Alsup, Fairgrove, MO 15.94 $591.37; and sixth June Holeman, Arcadia, NE 15.98 $473.10.
