Branstad clips Vander Plaats in Cherokee County Primary

County reports a meager 15% voter turnout

Of the 8855 registered voters in Cherokee County, 1352 of them voted in Tuesday's Primary Election for a disappointing turnout of 15.27% of voters going to the polls within the County's eight precincts.

The unofficial results of the 2010 Cherokee County Primary Election are as follows:

In the County Republican Primary, former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad received 518 votes for a percentage of 44.62 for Iowa Governor. Branstad received more votes than Bob Vander Plaats who received 418 votes and a percentage of 36, and Rod Roberts who received 225 votes and a percentage of 19.38.

In U.S. House of Representatives District 5, incumbent Steve King ran unopposed and received 1043 votes, a percentage of 99.33 with seven write-in votes.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley also went unopposed in Tuesday's Republican Primary. He received 98.59 percent, a total of 1049 votes with 15 write-ins.

Matt Schultz received 372 votes, a percentage of 44.87. Chris Sanger received 239 votes, a percentage of 28.83, and George Eichhorn received 217 votes with a percentage of 26.18 for Iowa Secretary of State. There was one write-in vote.

David Vaudt went unopposed in the Primary for Iowa State Auditor with 849 votes and a percentage of 99.76. There were two write-in votes reported.

David Jamison received 531 votes for a total of 45.39 percent over James Heavens who received 278 votes and a percentage of 34.24 for the Iowa State Treasurer Primary race. There were also three write-in votes cast in that race.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey received 931 votes for a percentage of 99.89. There was one write-in vote cast.

Brenna Findley received 830 votes for a percentage of 99.64 in the Primary Race for Iowa Attorney General. There were three write-in votes cast.

For Iowa Senate District 27, Bill Anderson received 865 votes for a percentage of 99.77 and two write-in votes were cast.

Dan Huseman received 1011 votes for a percentage of 99.61 with four write-in votes cast for Iowa State Representative District 53.

Jeff Simonsen received 972 votes for a percentage of 99.18 with eight write-in votes for Cherokee County Supervisor District 3.

Mark Leeds received 907 votes for a percentage of 98.59 with 13 write-in votes for Cherokee County Supervisor District 4.

Roswitha "Hedgie" Brandt received 960 votes for a percentage of 99.69 with three write-in votes for Cherokee County Treasurer.

There were 48 write-in votes cast in the Republican Primary for Cherokee County Recorder.

Ryan Kolpin received 915 votes for a percentage of 99.24 with seven write-in votes cast for Cherokee County Attorney.

In the Democrat Primary for Iowa Governor, Chet Culver received 147 votes with a percentage of 94.84 and there were eight write-in votes cast.

The Democratic U.S Senator race saw Roxanne Conlin receiving 133 votes with a percentage of 73.89. Bob Krause received 26 votes for a percentage of 14.44, and Thomas Fiegen received 21 votes with a percentage of 11.67.

For Democratic Primary race for U.S. House of Representative District 5, Matthew Campbell received 134 votes for a percentage of 78.82. Mike Denklau received 36 votes with a percentage of 21.18.

Michael Mauro received 145 votes with a percentage of 100 for Iowa Secretary of State.

There were two write-in votes cast for Iowa State Auditor Democratic Primary.

Michael Fitzgerald received 156 votes for a percentage of 100 for Iowa State Treasurer.

Tom Miller received 156 votes with a percentage of 100 for Iowa Attorney General.

Mary Pottebaum received 149 votes for a percentage of 100 for Iowa Senate District 27.

For Iowa State Representative District 53, there were four write-in votes.

Chad Dutler received 135 votes for a percentage of 100 for Cherokee County Supervisor District 3.

No votes were cast for Cherokee County Supervisor District 4.

Dawn Jones Coombs received 156 votes for Cherokee County Recorder for a percentage of 100.

There were four write-in votes for Cherokee County Attorney.

All results are unofficial until canvassed by the Cherokee County Board of Supervisors during next Tuesday's meeting at the Cherokee County Courthouse
