This year's theme will be "Tomb of the Unknown Solider." Plans are currently being finalized to host the Traveling Tomb of the Unknown Solider, which is a three- quarter replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider in Washington, D.C.

Once again the American Legion Riders will escort the replica to Cherokee like they did in 2007 when the traveling Vietnam Memorial arrived in Cherokee.

The Tomb will be arriving in Cherokee on Aug. 13. On Aug. 14, Veterans Appreciation Day, a ceremonial event will take place at 1 p.m.

Also scheduled to be in attendance on Aug. 14 are: South Dakota Veteran Administration Hospital of Sioux Falls; Iowa Veteran Administration Regional Office of Des Moines; Camp Dodge Veteran Office; County and National Veteran Service Officers; Military Units; Sioux City Vet Center.

One other special event is a representative from the Sullivan Brother Museum who will be conducting historical interviews and documenting stories from local veterans who wish to participate.

Plus, the Commercial Building at the fair grounds will be hosting area vendors. Evans explains, "Were hoping for a lot of community involvement this year and to make this event the best one yet.

"We would like to invite as many area youth as possible, we would like to get them involved so they know what kind of sacrifices our veterans have made," added Evans.

"Our goal is to have this celebration bigger than ever, eventually as big as Flag Fest in Spencer." Evans added "Were still open to ideas, we are inviting all of the county businesses to get involved. We're open to anything to make our Veterans Appreciation Day better."

Other events planned will be an interactive on-line booth where former service personal or the families can look up information on service records, medical records, deployment, and medals or commendations that have been received.

There also will be an area reserved to show younger kids movies from Military One Source on why a parent has to be gone from home. On the same theme there will also be a Power Point presentation available to help families cope with long deployment and veteran counselors will also be set-up in the commercial building.

Plus, there will be donation boxes at the celebration for people wishing to drop off items for soldiers who are currently serving. Evans suggest that if people bring gifts to be shipped overseas that people bring items that the whole company can use and not just an individual.

Evans also stated that they will be raffling off a Samsung Home Entertainment Center, chances will be $5 and if a local person wins, Phlanz Electronics technician will set the entertainment center up for them.
