Summer vacation is in full swing and the children's department at the Cherokee Public Library has been buzzing with everyone enjoying the books, games, computers and puzzles.
Just three more weeks and the Summer Reading Program, "Make a Splash---Read," will begin.
What would the program be without a Family Boat Contest? There will be three categories, "Most Use of Recyclable Materials", "Most Colorful", and "A Paper Boat." You may use books, internet, how to books, or your own creative mind to build your boat. You must make your boat from scratch.
Don't forget this is a family project, so be sure to include everyone in the project. You have from June 7 -- July 8 to build your vessel. Bring your completed boats into the library between July 5 -- July 8. Each boat will be put on display in the children's department during the summer reading program.
Each entry will be judged the last week of the program and prizes for the winners will be awarded at the finale at the Bacon Aquatic Center. The entry form and rules for the contest can be picked up in the children's department.
"Pockets Full of Fun" with Lisa Laird and friends, sponsored with a gift from Ann Gordon and Tony Startt, will once again kick-off our summer reading program on Friday, July 2 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Sanford Museum. There will be puppets, magic, and music to be enjoyed by all. Those who come will make a puppet they can take home.
Reading logs, guidelines, and bags for "Make a Splash --- Read" will be sent home with each child who has signed up.
Our summer reading program will offer programs on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for pre-school through 2nd grade children and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for 3rd through 6th grade children.
Each week has a special theme about water. The theme for July 6 and 8 is "Oceans of Fun." The Sanford Museum will share some facts, stories, and activities about the ocean. July 13 and 15's theme is "Splish Splash Summer."
This week swimming pool personnel share information about the pool and then we will play some water games. Come prepared to get wet. July 20 and 22's theme is "High Sea Adventures." Tuesday, July 20 a group of high school and middle school students will put on a play, The Adventures of the Wonderful Sea Creatures."
This play was written by Molly VerHeul from Cherokee. She made all the props and puppets that will be used for the play. Thursday, July 22 is dress the pirate and attend pirate school. You might want to come to the library and check out some books on pirates so you can bone up on facts about pirates.
Family Night will be Thursday, July 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with storyteller Indiana Bones and Draco the Dragon at the Cherokee Community Center. Sponsors are Paul and Marilyn Cedar.
The finale will be a swimming party at the Bacon Aquatic Center on July 27.
