Friday, June 18, 2010

Paige K. Stieneke, a senior at Washington High School in Cherokee has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Grand Lodge of Iowa, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

Stieneke was one of 60 outstanding Iowa high school students selected to receive the scholarship from more than 800 applicants.

Iowa Masons award scholarships each year in recognition of a student's academic performance, community activities, leadership, and financial need.

Since the program's inception in 1970, the Grand Lodge of Iowa has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to 1,745 students. This year alone, $120,000 in scholarships were awarded from an endowment fund established to recognize the accomplishments of young Iowans and to promote the education of future, state leaders.

At present, Stieneke plans to start her studies of pre-medicine at Iowa State University studying biology and English. "Paige pursues learning as one who enjoys the discovery process and becomes one of those students that brighten a teacher's day with her natural curiosity and true motivation to learn."
