SIOUX RAPIDS - The Alta-Aurelia Warriors bested the Sioux Central Rebels here on Monday in exciting Northwest Conference baseball action.
Warriors coach Dan Wendel said, "This was a very exciting game from start to finish. I was very proud of our kids and how they battled through our lack of hitting tonight, and still found ways to score important runs. Sioux Central played a very good game and I thought their pitcher did a very nice job of throwing strikes and keeping us guessing. We played solid defense, and that was a key to us winning the game. Christian (Weiland) started the game off well, but was tiring in the third. I thought Ben (Stevens) did a very nice job in relief and kept us in the game. Dylan Suhr came in the game at a very tough spot with the bases loaded and nobody out, but managed to throw strikes and get us out with the win."
Stevens picked the win on the mound, as he went four innings in relief, striking out two and giving up two earned runs. Suhr came on in the 9th with the bases loaded and nobody out. He got the first two batters out, then gave up a single that scored a run, but the last batter grounded out to Weiland at third with the potential tying run at second.
Following the game, an elated Coach Wendel stated, "We had to do the little things like bunting and moving runners (tonight), and I was very happy with our execution. This was an important test for this team and I thought we did an excellent job of handling the pressure."
The Warriors' overall record now stands at an impressive 13-2, and they are unbeaten in Northwest Conference play.
