WHS girls post 2-2 tourney mark

SPENCER - The Cherokee Washington High softball team posted a 2-2 record at last weekend's Spencer Invitational Tournament, defeating Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 6-2, falling 13-3 to rated Newell-Fonda (20-3), beating George-Little Rock 9-8, and losing 3-1 to Sioux City West.

Shanon Shaefer got the pitching win for Cherokee in the win over MMC, allowing two runs on six hits and five walks, with one strikeout in seven innings of work.

MMC hurler Kayla Foresman took the loss, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks, with two Ks in seven innings.

Autumn Shaefer was 1-3 for the winners with a double and run scored, and Megan Hummel was 1-2 with an RBI and run scored. Taylor Woods also had an RBI single.

Foresman led the Eagles at the plate with an RBI single.

Third-ranked Newell-Fonda beat the WHS gals in five innings, with Kaitlyn Miller taking the mound loss, allowing eight earned runs on five hits and six walks, with one K in four innings.

Woods was 2-2 with a double to pace the Cherokee batters, and Katie Sambrano was 1-2 and scored a run. Jackie Wilson, Hummel and Shanon Shaefer also singled, with Wilson tacking on an RBI.

Shanon Shaefer picked up the win for Cherokee over George-Little Rock, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks, with two Ks in seven innings.

Sarah Ruehle led Cherokee's offense with a 3-4 gamr, a run scored, and one RBI. Wilson was 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Amanda Kohn and Autumn Shaefer each had RBI singles.

Miller pitched three innings for Cherokee against Sioux City West. She allowed just one earned run on two hits and three walks, with one K. Shanon Shaefer pitched four innings and gave up two runs on two hits and one walk.

Ruehle led the Cherokee batters with her team's only hit in the game. Cherokee stranded eight base runners.

"The team had a very good weekend coming out 2-2 and facing some very good competition," said Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck. "We played good defense and the bats really started going at times."

The busy WHS gals (5-18) play at Emmetsburg tonight, and at Carroll Kuemper Friday night.
