The Cherokee softball team was blistered decisively by three tough Lakes Conference opponents in the past week, losing 12-0 at Estherville-LC, falling 16-5 to Spirit Lake in Cherokee, and dropping an 18-0 whoopin' to Hull Western Christian in Cherokee Monday night.
The WHS girls managed four hits in the shut-out lost to E-LC, with Autumn Shaefer, Clare Tuttle, Shanon Shaefer, and Jackie Wilson tallying those safeties.
Shanon Shaefer took the pitching loss, allowing 12 runs on 17 hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings when the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.
"Estherville hit the ball very well tonight and was able to place the ball in the gaps," explained Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck.
Shaefer also took the mound loss against Spirit Lake, giving up 12 earned runs on 10 hits and seven walks in 3 1/3 innings. Kaitlyn Miller pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed one walk and struck out one.
Shanon Shaefer was 2-2 with two doubles and four RBI to pace the WHS attack, and Sarah Ruehle was 1-2 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored. Amanda Kohn and Megan HUmmel also had hits for Cherokee.
Spirit Lake's Paige Krause set a school record of nine RBI after going 4-4 with a single, double, two home runs, and four runs scored.
In the 18-0 blitz by HWC, Cherokee did not get a hit against Wolfpack pitcher Abby Horstman, who faced just 18 batters in the game and struck out eight in six innings of action.
Shanon Shaefer pitched 5 2/3 innings for Cherokee in the mound loss, allowing 16 earned runs on 18 hits and four walks. Kaitlyn MIller pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up one hit.
Cherokee plays at second-rated Emmetsburg tonight, and at Carroll Kuemper on Friday.
