Cherokee Swim Team hosts first meet

The Cherokee Swim Team hosted its first meet of the 2010 season at the Bacon Aquatics Center on June 23 against Conference rival Rockwell City.

This match-up is always a fun meet as the two teams are pretty evenly matched in numbers and speed. After getting off to a slow start, the meet finished in fine fashion on a beautiful evening. The host team boasted 4 triple winners, 6 double winners and 14 single event winners during the meet. The team also posted 12 relay wins out of 18.

The triple winners were: Brett Barritt in the 11-12 boys' age group where he won the 100m freestyle in a time of 1:23.16, the 50m backstroke which he completed in 51.11 seconds and the 50m freestyle which took him just 38.01 seconds.

Megan Brown took 3 events in the 8 & under girls' age group, winning the 50m freestyle in 50.00, the 25m breaststroke in 31.19 and the 100m Individual Medley (where the swimmer completes 25m of each stroke-butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle). That event took her 2:31.46 to finish.

Kaely Hummel was a triple winner in the 11-12 girls' age group where she won the 50m breaststroke in 49.62, the 50m freestyle in 37.52 and the 100m I.M. with a time of 1:42.28.

The final triple winner was Halie Kraft who took 1st in the 100m freestyle in 1:18.53, the 50m butterfly in 39.63 and the 100m I.M. in a time of 1:35.33 in the 13-14 girls' age group.

Double event winners were: Brianna Fowler in the 15-18 girls' 50m backstroke which she completed in 37.86 seconds and the 100m I.M. which took her 1:30.76 to complete. Emily Haselhoff won 2 events in the 13-14 girls' age group taking the 50m breaststroke in a time of 45.07 and the 50m freestyle in 37.08. Kylie Mongan won the 9-10 girls' 100m freestyle in a time of 1:30.91 and the 25m freestyle in 19.34 seconds.

Kaeleb Royster took two of the 9-10 boys' events, the 100m freestyle in 2:06.42 and the 25m freestyle in 23.86. Lindsay Williams took two more of the 9-10 girls' events-the 25m butterfly in 20.3 seconds and the 50m freestyle in 41.65 seconds and the final double winner was Matthew Stieneke won two events from the 8 & under boys' age group, where he took the 25m backstroke in a time of 31.91 seconds and the 25m freestyle which he completed in 28.29 seconds.

The long list of single event winners starts with Thad Booth who won the 9-10 boys' 25m backstroke in a time of 29.67, Calvin Chalstrom is next and he won the 11-12 boys' 50m breaststroke in 52.55, Emily Cook won the 15-18 girls' 50m freestyle in 34.99 seconds, while Liz Dawson won the 50m breaststroke in that same age group, in a time of 46.57 seconds. Taylan Entriken took 1st in the 11-12 boys' 100m I.M. in 1:47.73 while Niesa Freed won the 15-18 girls' 100m freestyle in a time of 1:49.32.

Abby Goettsch captured another event for the 9-10 girls by winning the 100m I.M. in 1:55.69. Hayley Graybill captured the 11-12 girls' 50m butterfly in a time of 47.96. Emma Jensen won the 8 & under girls' 25m butterfly in 30.85 while Scott Long took 1st in the 15-18 boys' 100m freestyle in 1:28.56. Carson Mongan was a winner in the 8 & under boys' 25m breaststroke in a time of 41.53; while teammate Michael Rosewall won the 13-14 boys' 100m freestyle in 1:19.97.

The final two individual event winners were Grace Teusink in the 11-12 girls' 50m backstroke in a time of 47.93 and Alyssa Trapp who took home a win in the 9-10 girls' age group, giving the host team victories in 6 of the 7 events for that age group, by winning the 25m breaststroke in 27.03.

The 12 relay wins start with the 8 & under girls' 100m Medley Relay team of Emma Jensen, Morgan Graybill, Megan Brown and Megan Boger who finished their event in 2:09.88. The 9-10 girls took both their relays. The 100m Medley Relay team was made up of Lindsay Williams, Addisyn Jensen, Kylie Mongan and Jennifer Barritt and they finished in a time of 1:35.48, while the 100m Free Relay team consisted of Williams, Mongan, Barritt and Abby Goettsch and they finished in 1:17.99. The 9-10 boys also won both their 100m Medley and 100m Free relays. The medley team was made up of Kaeleb Royster, Carson Mongan, Thad Booth and Tyler Richardson, while it was Royster, Mongan, Booth and Dawson Ducommun in the free relay. The medley team finished in a time of 1:45.87; while the free relay took 2:18.76 to complete. The 11-12 girls won the 200m Free Relay with team members Taylor Hirschman, Hayley Graybill, Liz Herrera and Kaely Hummel in a time of 2:48.69. The 11-12 boys won both the 200m Medley and the 200m Free relays in their age group with members Kyle Roepke, Calvin Chalstrom, Taylan Entriken and Brett Barritt. The winning medley time was 3:18.56 and the free relay time was 3:01.74. The 13-14 girls won both their relays also. The 200m Medley team of Mikki Hinkhouse, Emily Haselhoff, Halie Kraft and Britney Sargent won in 2:53.09 while the Free relay team of Haselhoff, Kraft, Sargent and Mikayla Schuett won in 2:29.55. The 15-18 girls were the final group to win both their relays. In the 200m Medley Relay it was Brianna Fowler, Mikaela Booth, Beth Hanner and Emily Cook taking first in a time of 2:53.69, while the 200m Free Relay team consisted of Fowler, Booth, Cook and Liz Dawson and they won in 2:27.97.
