The Cherokee Braves split their final two Lakes Conference games to wrap up the 2010 regular season, defeating Emmetsburg 7-3 in Emmetsburg Friday night, and falling 5-4 in a heartbreaker to visiting Le Mars here Tuesday night.
Brock Benson was the winning pitcher for Cherokee at Emmetsburg, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk, with four strikeouts in four innings of work. Kyle Schuck closed out the game for the Braves, firing a one-hit shutout with one walk and eight impressive strikeouts in three innings.
Zac Woods paced the Cherokee attack with a home run on a 2-4 night, while Alanzo Ruble was 1-5 with a three-run home run, and Cody Ege 1-2 with a solo home run.
Matt Pitts took the pitching loss against Le Mars in Cherokee Tuesday night, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks, with four Ks in two innings of work. Cody Ege relieved Pitts and allowed one run on one hit and no walks, with nine strikeouts in four innings. Schuck pitched the last inning and gave up no runs on one hit and one walk, with two Ks.
Curtis Ege paced the Braves at the plate with a 2-3 game and two RBI, while Matt Pitts was 2-4, Woods with an RBI double, Cody Ege and RBI single, and Gordy Gill a single.
Cherokee ends regular season with a 13-13 record and a 6-8 Lakes Conference mark. The Braves play Sioux Central in Cherokee at 7 p.m. Saturday following the South O'Brien-Hinton matchup beginning at 5:30 p.m. Those winners then play in Cherokee at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
