Sophomore Blane Cullen had a huge night at the plate for River Valley, going 4 for 5 with two doubles and delivering 5 RBI to help his team to a 13-3 win over Charter Oak-Ute last week.
RV coach Eric Goettsch said "Blane has really gotten hot lately, and that will really help going into tournament play this week. He's capable of driving in bunches of runs." Goettsch also lauded the work of sophomore catcher Skylar Shever, who, he said, "played a great game behind the plate. He kept everything in front of him. We counted five foul tip strike three balls that he squeezed and he also threw a runner out trying to steal second. Skylar is a kid you know will give you everything he's got every game and tonight he picked it up another notch."
Eighth graders Brennan Riedeman, Parker Goettsch, and Mason Alitz contributed to the RV attack as well, with Riedemann going 2 for 5 with four RBI and stealing two bases; Goettsch was 2 for 4 with two RBI and three stolen bases; and Alitz was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Other contributors in the offensive attack for the Wolverines included Andrew Volkert, going 2 for 4 with two stolen bases, Samuel Lundt with a single and an RBI and Luke Wilen, who doubled.
"We really got out of the gate well," said Goettsch, "and really attacked the ball and ran the bases aggressively. Sam Lundt was the story defensively for the Wolverines. The senior starting pitcher for the Wolverines struck out 15 batters on the night. He pitched a fantastic game, and the rest of the team also played well defensively."
River Valley began district play on Tuesday in Moville where they played the host Woodbury Central team in a match-up of Western Valley Conference opponents.
