Hazel Jeanne (Peggy) Ammons of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Aurelia, Iowa, died Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the James River Care Center in Springfield. She was 88.
Peggy was born Dec. 10, 1921 in Banks, Ore., the daughter of Earl and Elpha (Schulmerich) Wilson. She attended school and grew up in the Banks area, graduating from Tillamook, Oregon High School in 1939.
Peggy received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from the University of Portland in 1943. She then taught in the Pediatrics Department and worked in the Children's Hospital in San Francisco, Calif.
On June 25, 1947, Peggy was united in marriage to Max C. Ammons in Tacoma, Washington and moved to Aurelia to raise their family and to continue her nursing career. Peggy was Director of Nursing at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute in Cherokee for 25 years and then went on to be a nursing educator at the same institute. She retired with over 50 years of nursing service.
Peggy most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was a loving influence to all who shared her life. She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Springfield.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, her parents and a brother David Wilson.
Survivors include her children Mark Ammons and wife Deborah of Sioux City, Sheila Steffes and husband Ron of Springfield, Mo. and Tracy Ammons and wife Constance of Ladson, S.C.; grandchildren Jennifer (Mrs. Joseph) Passanise, Molly Steffes, Aimee (Mrs. Jim) Labrie, Trisha (Mrs. Sean) Monahan, Kristin (Mrs. Patrick) Murphy, Logan, Esther and Sheila Ammons; great-grandchildren Brendan, Ellie, Isabella and Samuel; one sister and her husband Barbara and James Larsen; sister-in-law and her husband Joyce and Jerry Rohrbaugh and many cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.
