Notes from the American Legion

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

On July 15 the Cherokee American Legion Post and Unit met for their monthly meeting. New officers took over their duties.

It was announced that Loren Godfrey of Cherokee won the 42-inch TV at the Cherokee County Fair.

Since their last meeting, several of them had worked the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary booths at the Cherokee County Fair promoting their programs as well as hoping to find families that would like their help while family members are deployed.

If anyone has information about a military family in the area that is not yet involved they can contact any Auxiliary member.

The Legion will be hosting bingo again on the first Saturday of August.

August is the beginning of their new year so they are encouraging anyone interested in joining to contact them for information. They are always looking for new members. Sharon Godfrey became the newest member at the last Auxiliary meeting.

The Legion has had several community persons ask about Sons of the American Legion (which is open to any man who has a father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, brother or sister who has or is serving in the Armed services).

This group is made up of men who want to help with our Veterans and it operates in a similar fashion to the Ladies Auxiliary except that it is comprised of men instead of women. If you are interested in becoming involved or would like more information, please contact:

Commander Dave Quick - 712-240-0016

Vice-Commander David Brown - 712-225-3449

Adjutant Robert Wittrock - 712-225-0512

They need 10 gentlemen to start this organization.

The Post and Unit met jointly after the business meeting to give out their yearly awards. Post Adjutant Robert Wittrock presented a special award to Past Commander David Brown honoring his years of service in the position. Along with a Past Commanders pin, David received a beautiful wooden plague made by Mick Bakker.

Their next regular meeting will be held Aug. 19 at the Legion Hall on West Cedar Street. Everyone is welcome.

Questions? Please contact Ladies Auxiliary President, Claudia Brown, at 225-3449.
