The Cherokee American Legion Post 230 is notifying area residents of local sendoff ceremonies for approximately 2,800 members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2BCT), Iowa Army National Guard. The ceremonies will be held in various locations throughout Iowa from July 30 through Aug. 9. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the sendoff ceremony.
Following the sendoff ceremony, the soldiers will report to their mobilization station at Camp Shelby, Miss. for additional training and preparation before departing for Afghanistan.
The 2BCT has been ordered to federal active duty under a partial mobilization call-up that authorizes the President of the United States to order members of the National Guard and Reserves to active duty for one year.
The mission of the 2BCT is to provide full-spectrum operations in a combat theater, including lethal and non-lethal capabilities, support to Afghan National Army and Police units, and assistance to humanitarian relief initiatives.
Times, dates and location of local ceremony are as follows:
Friday, July 30
Storm Lake -- Company G, 334th Brigade Support Battalion (approximately 80 Soldiers) will take place at 11 a.m. at Storm Lake High School at 621 Tornado Drive.
Sunday, Aug. 1
Carroll -- Company a, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry (approximately 100 Soldiers) will take place at 10 a.m. at the Carroll High School, 2809 N. Grant Road.
Estherville -- Battery A, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry, Newton unit, (approximately 100 Soldiers) will take place at 11 a.m. at the Estherville Armory, 1704 3rd Ave. South.
Thursday, Aug. 5
Le Mars -- Troop C, 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry, (approximately 80 Soldiers) will take place at 9 a.m. at the Le Mars High School at 921 3rd Ave.
Sioux City -- Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry and Company D, 334th Brigade Support Battalion (approximately 170 Soldiers) will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sioux City East High School at 5011 Mayhew Drive.
