Fair is Marcus' top annual event

Thursday, August 5, 2010

The Marcus Community Fair has a strong family focus and has been going on for 74 years, always the second weekend in August. The fair showcases the wide-range of talent in the community regardless of age. Through exhibition, competition and education, it highlights the community's ties to agriculture, industry and business; all of which provide the backbone to Marcus and the surrounding area. The Fair has become an annual reunion where old friends and families have an opportunity for reaquaintance and remembrance.

The Marcus Fair has had free admittance for the last 25 years and this year will be no exception. Everyone can enjoy a free gate and participate in every activity at the fair. This is made possible through various fund-raisers, county and state funding, grant writing and by generous local supporters.

The 18-member board works diligently throughout the year to find, promote and schedule activities, working hard to maintain the grounds and the facilities. Volunteers serve on committees and help with numerous tasks during the Marcus Fair. Without these volunteers, the Marcus Fair would not happen. Those serving on the board are Dr. Kristi Mason, David Whithed, Jeff Kolbaum, Gwen Peters, Clay Leavitt, Sharon Rupp, LaRae Wendt, Ray Addy, Steve Kunzweiler. Jaci Seabloom, Sheila Guntren, Kirk Letsche, Rod Ogren, Paul Wilkens, Bruce Rainboth, Kyle Tapper, Ric Collins and Bart Alesch.

The board is bringing some new events to the fair this year which includes a chicken and rabbit show on Sunday. In addition to the always entertaining cooking school, Diane Gubbel shares her talents with an extensive show of quilting. It doesn't get any better than Gubbel.

For those who enjoy wrestling, there will be a number of wrestlers showing how they get around the ring on Sunday evening. Bring your voice to yell for your favorite. Saturday morning, there will be an antique farm equipment display to view. A planned wild bird feeding clinic is early Saturday afternoon in Centennial Hall.

Marcus Fair crowds have always enjoyed a hypnotist and so the board brought back the sensational Jeff Quinn who was in Marcus several years ago. You can see him work on Friday evening around 8 p.m. in the Hall of Progress.

The community center board is hosting Dave Fintel beginning at 9 p.m, so folks who have come back home to visit can meet up with former classmates at the center. Admission is free. The board wants everyone to come and see the remodeling and changes in the center after all their hard work has been completed. They are hoping this will become an annual event. This is really a fine way to see others all at the same time and place. Hopefully, it will become a regular event.

Junior Pearson is opening his two new barns to share his wonderful carriages and antiques from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It is located southeast of the horse arena. In additon to this, the Marcus Historical Society is going to be displaying the deceased Dr. Joint's vehicle, which is a cool sight. They will have a booth to share some other information plus some antique grave markers which can be bought if desired.

Look at the fair schedule and plan your time. There is something for everyone regardless of age.
