New school year to begin for county schools

Cherokee Washington High School will be holding a Freshman and New Student orientation on Monday, August 16 from 7-9 pm at Washington High School. Parents are encouraged to attend this with their high school student.

Roosevelt Elementary School in Cherokee will be holding a "Meet the Teacher night" for all K-4 students on Tuesday August 17, from 5:30-7 p.m. The Cherokee Cattlemen's Association will be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs. Come meet your teacher and bring your school supplies.

The first day of school for students in grades 1-12 in Cherokee will be Thursday, August 19. Kindergarten will start on Monday, August 23.

River Valley

The River Valley Community School District will be holding an Open House at the elementary building in Washta from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday August 18. 7th Grade Orientation will take place at 7 p.m. that evening, and classes begin for all students on Thursday, August 19.


The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn School District will hold 7th Grade Orientation from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 16; freshman orientation will take place at noon on Monday; and K-12 new student orientation will be at 2 p.m. Monday.

There will be a Back-to-School dance for High School students on Friday, August 20 following the Football scrimmage; and the school will have an Open House from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24. Classes begin for students the following day, Wednesday, August 25.


In the Aurelia District, the Parent-Teacher Organization will be having a Hot Dog Supper from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 17 at the school. A free will donation will be collected to help defray expenses.

"Meet Your Teacher Night" then commences at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 7:30 p.m. Parents and students in grades TK-12 will have the opportunity to visit the classrooms and meet the faculty at that time.

The Aurelia School welcomes two members to its staff this year. Jack Johnson will be assuming the position of Interim Superintendent for 2010-2011. Jack is a familiar face in Aurelia, having served as the Aurelia High School Principal from 1988-1994. Johnson has most recently been Superintendent in the Schleswig School District, where he served for 15 years before retiring in 2009.

The Aurelia District will also be sharing an art teacher with the Alta Community School this year. Cherie Courter will be teaching art half time in Aurelia, in the afternoon.

Following "Meet the Teacher Night" on Tuesday, there will be a mandatory meeting in the Aurelia High School Gym for all high school students who will be participating in any sport, band, choir, DECA, cheerleading, drill team, speech and drama, and any other extracurricular activity. Students must be accompanied by at least one of their parents, as the school's Good Conduct Policy is explained and discussed. Students who do not attend the meeting will not be allowed to practice or participate in extracurricular activities unto they have viewed a videotape of the August 17 meeting. The following day, Wednesday, August 18, will be the first day of school for Aurelia students. School will be dismissed at noon on that first day (August 18), but the regular school day for Grades TK-4 will be 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and for Grades 5-12 it will be 8:20 a.m.-3:30 p.m..
