Welcome to our new Cherokee Area Economic Development board members!
At the June 30 meeting the Cherokee Area Economic Development Corporation said goodbye to two Board members who have completed their terms and have made the decision to leave the Board at this time. We wish to thank Tom Kellen, county-at-large and Jon Simonsen, Quimby for serving on the Board for two consecutive three year terms. Tom Kellen served as Board, President for the years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 and served as Past President, 2009-2010, which is an advisory position to the Executive Committee. Tom's leadership and guidance will be greatly missed.
Joining us for two open seats as county-at-large we welcome Stan Remington and Andy Carlson. Stan Remington is the general manager at Sand Seed in Marcus. Stan comes to the Board with a background of Board service. He and his family have recently moved to the area when he took the position with Sand Seed this past year. Andy Carlson is a lifelong member of the Cherokee area and is working with Northwest Realty of Cherokee. Andy's agriculture background and involvement within our County will be great assets to our Board. Also, joining the Board is Curtis Cockburn, Quimby. Curtis is a Quimby city council member and works for Cherokee County as the GIS Specialist. His knowledge of the area and county involvement will help give guidance to our Board. These new board members bring a wealth of knowledge and business expertise to our membership. We look forward to working with them for the next three years and hopefully beyond that.
As a note I would like to tell you how we go about selecting new members. In March of each year four (4) members of the Cherokee Industrial Corporation Board (CIC), two members of the Marcus Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO) and two members of the Aurelia Development Corporation are given the task of soliciting names to fill the upcoming CAEDC Board vacancies. Names are solicited from the Cherokee County Board of Supervisors, CAEDC, MEDCO, Aurelia Development, the City Councils of each city within the County, as well as other sources. A meeting is held in April to review all of the names that have been brought to the Nominating Committee. Discussion is held and resumes are reviewed. A May meeting is held and the nominees are selected. The nominee's names are presented at the next meeting of the County Board of Supervisors, for the at-large positions, for approval. The same is done with those cities that have a new board member to represent them. Once the approvals are received the names are presented to the CAEDC Board. The new members attend the June meeting to meet the rest of the Board, receive pertinent information and have the opportunity to sit back and observe how the Board conducts a meeting. As of July they take on their official duties. If you or any one you know would be interested in serving on the Cherokee Area Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors contact our office and that name will be added to our list of future board member contacts.
