Bonnie Elaine (Bauer) DeMers was born August 29, 1923 in Scranton, Iowa, the daughter of Peter C. and Fern (Rosbon) Bauer. She graduated from Ware High School in Pocahontas in 1941, and continued her education at the National Business Training School in Sioux City. She later worked as a secretary in Sioux City during WWII. Bonnie enjoyed going to USO dances during these years. She met her future husband, Donald E. DeMers, at a dance after the war. They were married on June 2, 1947 in Sioux City, and spent the next several years farming in the Jefferson and Elk Point, South Dakota area. Later in life, the couple farmed in the Kingsley and Pierson area. In 1965, they moved to a farm south of Marcus.
After the death of her husband Donald, in July of 1979, Bonnie remained on the farm for several years, until she moved to Spencer, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. For the last two years, Bonnie lived in Ankeny to be closer to her children.
Bonnie enjoyed painting in oil and watercolor, bridge, ceramics, golf, sewing, crocheting, reading, dancing and politics, and also had an appreciation of nature, which she acquired from her mother. Lake Okoboji was always a special place for her, and she looked forward to family vacations and enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Margo (Tom) Gates and Keith (Sharon) DeMers, both of Ankeny, and Candace (Randy) Nuebel of Fountain Hills, AZ; her grandchildren, Philip (Gina) Gates of Ankeny, Sheila Gates of Gretna, NE, Megan Nuebbel of Scottsdale, AZ; great grandchildren: Jensen, Avery and Owen of Ankeny, and Zachary, Carson and Caden of Gretna, NE; her brothers, Bruce (Katy) Bauer of Pocahontas, Dallas (Joyce) Bauer of LaMesa, NM, and Kendall (Elaine) Bauer of Sloan; sisters-in-law Ellen Bauer of Humboldt and LeAnn Bauer of Kimberling City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald; her parents; a sister, Beverly, and brother-in-law Bob Fernau of Council Bluffs; brothers Boyd Bauer of Kimberly City, MO and Garth Bauer of Humboldt; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Harold and Florence DeMers, and Charlie Larson of Elk Point, SD.
