Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Jim Steen will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Monday. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com
Joyce was born Oct. 19, 1919 rural Cherokee to Matthew and Icyel (Wedge) Lockwood. She graduated from Larrabee Schools in 1937 and attended NBT in Sioux City for one year. She was married to Clarence Bengtson on March 18, 1941 at South Sioux City, Neb. Joyce was a housewife; owned and operated the Chocolate Shop in Cherokee in the late 1940's. She and Clarence farmed for 57 years in the Aurelia and Larrabee regions, retiring and moving to Calumet in 1984. Mr. Bengtson passed away on May 21, 2005. Joyce moved to Cherokee from Calumet in 2007. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide at the Church. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, cooking, loved the outdoors and caring for her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a great granddaughter Jillian Smith, father-in-law and mother-in-law Robert and Jennie Bengtson.
She is survived by four children: Janice A. Woodall of Cherokee; Joanne F. Burgeson of Cherokee; Judy K. Timmins and her husband Larry of Cedar Falls; Jerry Bengtson and his wife Carolyn of Larrabee; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren: Kim Woodall Seliger and her husband Dan and their children Sofia and Nathaniel; Jerry & Kathy Woodall and their children Matthew, Maddison, Tanner and Grace; Julie & Larry Smith and their son Jay; Scott & Robin Jahn and their children Megan, Matthew and Shayla; Debbie & Brent Nelson and their children Jordan, Brandon and Dylan; Shelley & Steve Baker and their children Shelby and Jennifer; Adam Timmins, Chad & Amy Timmins, Wade Timmins and his fiance Caitlin Clark; a brother LeRoy Lockwood and his wife Joyce of Spirit Lake; special friends and caregivers Cindy Mueller and Pat Johnson.
