A benefit for Kelsie Peterson, a 2009 Cherokee Washington High graduate who was recently diagnosed with cancer, will be held Sunday, Sept. 5 in Cherokee.

A Co-ed Slowpitch Softball Tournament at Wescott Park in Cherokee has been organized that day, with proceeds going to help Peterson to defray her mounting medical costs.

Kelsie has begun rigorous chemotherapy treatment that will continue for the next year. She participated in many sports at WHS, and was enrolled at Dakota State University, where she is a member of the DSU softball team. Because of her illness, she will be unable to return to college this upcoming year.

Interested softball teams and players can learn more information and register for the tourney by contacting Misty Bruhn at 229-5235, or Alanna Valentine at 299-4026.

Team entry fees for the tourney are $50 per 10-member team, and $5 per extra player.

There will be a free will donation, grill out, and drawings for raffle prizes at Sunday's event. Come join the fun, even if you are not playing in the tournament.

Grilling starts at noon.
