SCHALLER - The Ridge View Raptors, ranked second in the state in Class 2A, hosted seven other teams in a tournament at Schaller on Saturday, and when the day was over the Raptors of Coach Scott Mitchell had suffered their first defeat of the season, losing to East Sac County in the finals of the tournament.
East Sac County is also undefeated and ranked 11th in the most recent 2A poll,. East Sac captured the tournament with a 25-18, 10-25, 15-10 win over the Raptors.
The Raptors beat Ar-We-Va, 21-16, 21-14, Woodbury Central 21-7, 21-19, and Westwood 21-16, 23-21, to win their Pool, while East Sac defeated OA-BCIG, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and West Monona to win theirs. East Sac then defeated Westwood 19-25, 25-18, 15-11, in the semi-finals and Ridge View beat MMC 24-26, 25-23, 15-13, in their semi.
Ridge View was led by Roxanne Grundmeier, who had 37 kills in the seven matches her team played on Saturday, while Brooke Wiese added 28 kills. Nicole Snyder led in assists with 57 on the day and Egypt Clayton had 40. Digs were led by Beth Schwanzs, with 43, and Grundmeier, with 40. Nicole Boyle had nine blocks on the say for the Raptors, and Grundmeier had six ace serves.
Raptors coach Mitchell said he felt his team played better than they had been playing, but added that they are still "looking for some consistency throughout the whole match." On a positive note, Mitchell said he was able to play different girls at different positions throughout the day, and he thinks that will help the team in the future.
Ridge View now boasts a 6-1 overall mark for the season. They are 1-0 in Western Valley Conference play.
Ridge View's Roxanne Grundmeier and Egypt Clayton were named to the All-Tournament team, and they were joined on the honor squad by East Sac's Caitlyn Boeckman and Hannah Brotherton, Westwood's Abbey Baker, and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's Erica Dreckman.
