WAUKEE - Katie's Crusaders made its debut in September of 2009, as friends of Katie (Schueder) Mangan decided to create a 5K run/walk to help former Cherokeans Katie and her husband Tim during her battle with breast cancer.

Katie and Tim were so overjoyed and overwhelmed by the support they received from family and friends all over the state that they have turned Katie's Crusaders into a Non-Profit Organization.

Katie wanted to "Pay Forward" what was so generously done for her, so this year Katie's Crusaders are going to sponsor a 5/10K run/walk to raise funds to help four families in their battle against breast cancer.

Three of the families are from the Des Moines area and one family is a Cherokee family. Jennifer (Wiersma) Probst (1994 Washington High School graduate) was diagnosed with breast cancer in February of 2010. Due to a strong family history of breast cancer (her mom, Darlene Wiersma is a 3-time survivor) Jennifer had genetic testing done. She is positive for the BRAC1 gene.

Since she has such a strong family history of breast cancer she has been going to the Oncologist every six months to be checked out. This is what has saved her life.

Jennifer is a wife to Keith Probst, mother to Madison (8), Allison(6), and Matthew (4). She also runs her own businesses as a Daycare provider and Baker. Due to all of Jennifer's treatment she has had to cut down on her business hours. She has also had to travel to Sioux Falls for treatment.

Please come and help support a local family in their battle against breast cancer. Katie's Crusaders are going to be participating in the run/walk fund raiser Saturday, September 18, at Centennial Park, Waukee, IA. To register please visit www.katiescrusaders.org there you will find hotel information, sponsors, and meet the other three Crusaders.

Even if you can't come, sign up to show your support...your packet information can be sent to Cherokee to Charlotte Schueder. If you have questions, please call Katie 515-473-8276 or Charlotte 712-225-2291.
