'Divapalooza' opens Clausen Center season

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

HOLSTEIN - 'Divapalooza' will open the premiere season at the Rosemary Clausen Center for Performing Arts in Holstein on September 25 at 7:30 pm., and the group couldn't be happier.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be the opening act and couldn't be more honored and excited." said Lynne Rothrock, one third of the trio.

The ladies all have solo careers in addition to wowing audiences with their three- part harmony in widely diverse musical genres. They incorporate blues, jazz, Broadway musical numbers, folk, rock, and country into their performance, so what's not to like? They do it all!

As Ken Buell, ticket director for the Center, put it, "This group is worth the price of a season ticket all by itself.".

The three performers first worked together when they were asked to take

part in a fund raiser for Theatre Cedar Rapids several years ago. They had

so much fun, and the evening was such a success, that they put together

another show the following year. Things pretty much snowballed from there,

and they have been touring the Midwest ever since.

The thing that makes Divapalooza unique is that they are three very

distinct singers with different styles that come together and unite in a

powerful force field of talent. The energy is terrific. The audience on

September 25th will be knocked out by their renditions of Motown classics

such as "River Deep, Mountain High", "Respect", and "It's Raining Men,"

and they will also be touched by the beauty of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and

"For Good," from the musical 'Wicked.' They can expect a few funny tunes as

well. What a night it promises to be!

Rothrock's cohorts are the mother and daughter team of Jane Pini and Janelle Lauer. Jane, billed as the 'Woodstock Rocker, ' never actually got to Woodstock. However, unlike some of the rest of us of that generation, she and her husband actually had tickets. but decided they didn't want to fight the traffic, so they missed the mud baths, fried amps, and some of the best mind-bending music ever. Jane began singing in the '60's, then took a break to raise a family and develop a career in psychotherapy. She has been performing again since 1994.

Jane's daughter, Janelle Lauer, began singing with her mother's band when she

was just three years old, and she hasn't stopped since. Janelle has appeared in, and

acted as musical director for, many of Theatre Cedar Rapids' productions, and

was a long- time performer on the popular 'Liar's Holographic Radio Theatre'

on Iowa Public Television. Janelle has two children, and also gives private voice lessons.

Lynne Rothrock grew up in Cedar Rapids, and she has been working as a

professional singer and arts educator for 25 years. She has also lived and

worked in St Paul, Seattle, and Nashville, where she developed a solo career

after working for a variety of theatre companies as both a performer and

musical director. She returned to Iowa in 2003, where she met and married

Ron DeWitte, an Iowa Blues and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist. In

addition to being a part of Divapalooza, Lynne and her husband work as

headline entertainers for Holland America Cruise Lines.
