AURELIA - The Alta- Aurelia Warriors got down early and trailed 28-0 at half-time of their first District football game of the season here Friday night.
West Lyon tacked on another score in the third quarter to make it 35-0, setting the running clock into play. The Wildcats scored another TD in the final frame, then scored a two-point conversion to make the final score 43-0 in favor of the Lyon County school.
West Lyon, led by quarterback Cody Gronewald's 115 yards on four carries and Trevor Snyders' 95 yards on nine carries, rushed for 350 yards as a team, and they also completed 1 of 4 passes for an additional 21 yards.
Alta-Aurelia had the ball for 58 plays compared to the visitors' 34, but the Wildcats gained 371 yards to Aurelia's 223 and made 13 first downs to Aurelia's 11.
Sophomore Garret VanHouten led the Warrior rushing attack with 73 yards on 13 carries, while Jalen Henningsen added 62 yards on 15 totes, and Nathan Corlew added 42 yards on seven carries. Ryan Friedrich completed six of 15 pass attempts for 54 yards and had one pass intercepted. Austin Glawe and Henningsen caught each two passes.
On defense for the Warriors, Karl Kennedy and Dylan Harms each recovered a fumble. VanHouten led the A-A team in tackles with six, while Glawe had five, and Kennedy and Chris Bengtson each had four tackles.
The Warriors, 1-2, will play the tough, 4th-ranked Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn team (3-0) in District play in Hartley on Friday.
