S.C East wins Cherokee Volleyball

Sioux City East beat Alta 25-16, 22-25, 15-10 in the championship match of the Cherokee Volleyball Invitational here Saturday.East is rated # 9 in Class 4A, and Alta is #2 in 1A.

In the championship round, East defeated Hinton 21-16, 21-18; and Alta beat MOC-Floyd Valley 25-20, 25-17 to make the championship match.

In the consolation bracket, Sioux City North beat Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 25-20, 21-25, 15-10 to take fifth place.

MMC defeated River Valley 25-22, 19-25, 15-11; and North beat Cherokee 25-9, 25-21 to arrive in the consolation finals.

In Pool A Play, MMC beat Cherokee 21-17, 21-15; East beat Alta 21-16, 21-19; Alta beat Cherokee 21-13, 21-17; East beat MMC 22-20, 21-12; East beat Cherokee 21-14, 21-9; and Alta beat MMC 21-11, 21-14.

In Pool B Play, MOC-FV beat River Valley 21-7, 21-10; Hinton beat North 22-20, 22-20; North beat RV 22-20, 21-13; MOC-FV beat Hinton 21-16, 17-21, 15-12; Hinton beat RV 19-21, 21-15, 15-12; and MOC-FV beat North 21-15, 21-10.

East won Pool A, followed by Alta, MMC, and Cherokee. MOC-FV won Pool B, followed by Hinton, North, and RV.

For Cherokee on the day, Shanon Shaefer led in serving with a 28-30 effort and five aces, followed by Sarah Ruehle19-22 and three aces, Jessica Cook 18-19 and two aces, Megan Carlson 16-17 and two aces, Megan Hummel 15-17 and one ace, and Denise Freed 11-12 and two aces.

Emily Cook led in hitting with 61-78 and 19 kills, followed by Shaefer 42-54 and nine kills, Hummel 41-57 and 11 kills, Jackie Wilson 30-45 and 11 kills, Jessica Cook 17-18 and five kills, and Liz Dawson 14-17 and five kills.

Jessica Cook led the WHS gals in setting with a 150-167 day and 24 assists. Cook also had a solo block and four assists, while Emily Cook had four assists, Wilson three, and Dawson two.

Shaefer led her team in digs with 25, while Hummel had 20, Ruehle 16, and Carlson 14.

For MMC totals on the day, Erica Dreckman led in hitting with an 87-100 effort and 40 kills, followed by Kayla Foresman 61-75 and 22 kills, Jalyn Doeden 57-69 and 25 kills, and Reagan McDaniel 28-31 and eight kills.

Doeden led the Eagles in serving with a 50-56 tourney and five aces, while Jackie Holmes was 40-43, Foresman 26-36 and four aces, Dreckman 24-30 and five aces, and McDaniel 21-25.

Doeden also paced MMC in digs with 18, while Dreckman tallied 17, and Stephanie Specht eight. Foresman led in blocks with 10 solos and 22 assists.

Cherokee plays at Spencer Thursday and in the Alta Tournament Saturday, MMC plays in the Granville Spalding Tournament Saturday, and River Valley plays in the Western Valley Conference Tournament beginning Saturday.
