The Cherokee Symphony Orchestra and Board of Directors are looking forward with great anticipation to the 2010-2011 concert season.
The 60-member orchestra provides the community with the highest quality musical entertainment while giving area musicians a semi-professional outlet for their musical talents.
Maestro Lee Thorson, a cellist and instructor from Storm Lake, has been the Cherokee Symphony conductor since 1981, and musicians may contact Thorson at 712-732-1497 if they are interested in arranging for an audition to join the Symphony.
This season, all Cherokee Symphony concerts will again be held at the Cherokee Community Center at 4 p.m. on Sundays.
The season's first concert, the all-orchestral Pops Concert, will be held on October 31, 2010, and will include the following pieces: "Pumpkin Eater's Little Fugue;" "Funeral March of a Marionette" (the Alfred Hitchcock Show Theme); "Pavanne for a Dead Princess;" "Symphonic Suite" from the film "Lord of the Rings;" "March to the Scaffold" from Berlioz's "Symphonic Fantastique;" and "Irish Suite" by Leroy Anderson.
The Mid-winter Concert will be March 13, 2011, and will include the appearance of a guest artist (to be announced).
The final concert of the season, the popular Young Artists Concert, will be May 1, 2011, and will showcase the winners of auditions which will be held during the winter.
The cost of a season ticket to the three Symphony concerts is $25 and individual tickets can be purchased for $10 on the day of the concert. Members receive two individual season tickets.
Cherokee Symphony Association memberships are now available, and program advertising space can also be purchased. The money from both of these goes to support the Symphony and assure the best programming available as well as future programming.
Please consider supporting the Cherokee Symphony through membership or advertising. The Symphony would be glad to add any newcomers to the area to their mailing list as well, if they so desire.
If you have questions about membership, advertising or anything else regarding the Cherokee Symphony, please contact Symphony Board Chairman Donna Hicks at P.O. Box 25 in Cherokee, call her at 712-225-5216, or visit www.cherokeesymphony.org.
