Freshman football Braves shine

A promising Cherokee Braves freshman football squad has racked up an impressive 3-1 record to date, winning three of the games by convincing margins, and dropping a closely contested fourth game.

The Young Braves beat Hull Western Christian 20-0 to open the season, then decked Storm Lake 20-0, before losing 29-16 to Le Mars, and rebounding with a decisive 44-22 verdict over Estherville-LC here Monday night.

In the HWC victory, quarterback Levi Lundquist rushed for 38 yards and one touchdown, and passed for 89 yards and two TDs to lead the Braves. Luke Ziemen rushed for 67 yards, and Kevin Fajardo had one catch for 34 yards and a TD, and Brett Walker had one catch for 26 yards and a TD.

Ziemen also paced Cherokee on defense with 12 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Lucas Lamoureaux had six tackles, Walker five and 1 1/2 sacks, and Jacob Witcomb two tackles and 1 1/2 sacks.

In the win over Storm Lake, Lundquist passed for 54 yards and one TD, Walker caught four passes for 42 yards and one TD, and Lamoureaux returned a punt 18 yards for a TD. Ziemen rushed for 64 yards, and Lamoureaux rushed for 47 yards.

Michael Rosewall led Cherokee's defense with 10 tackles, while Walker had eight, a sack, and a forced fumble, and Ziemen six tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery he returned 80 yards for a TD.

In the loss to Le Mars, Ziemen rushed for 107 yards, Walker sped 70 yards with a kick-off return for a TD, and Walker had two catches for 14 yards and a TD. Lundquist passed for 28 yards and a TD.

Rosewall led the defense with 15 tackles and a forced fumble, while Walker had 13 tackles and a fumble recovery, Ziemen had 13 tackles, and Lundquist had nine tackles and a safety.

In the win over E-LC, Ziemen rushed for 207 yards and three TDs, and two 2-point conversions. Lundquist passed for 71 yards and two TDs, and rushed for 61 yards. Walker had 42 yards rushing and 25 yards receiving and a TD. Blake Booth had one catch for 17 yards and a TD. Lamoureaux tallied 68 yards rushing. Ziemen had an 80-yard kick-off return for a TD and totaled 326 yards of offense.

Ziemen also led the Braves on defense with 15 tackles and an interception, REosewall had 11 tackles, Walker nine and a sack, Carlos Aguillar five tackles and two sacks, Lundquist five tackles and a fumble recovery, and Booth five tackles and a forced fumble.
