MARCUS - Akron-Westfield parlayed a 21-14 halftime lead with two more touchdowns in the second half on the way to a 35-14 Class A District football win over a young and feisty Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn team here Friday night.
The Eagles scored two TDs in the first half on passes from Tanner Utesch to Zach Specht. Utesch completed 10-22 passes for 171 yards and two TDs in the game, but also had four interceptions at the hands of the alert Westerner defense. Jared Gross completed 4-8 passes for MMC for 17 yards and two more interceptions as the Eagles threw the ball with abandon trying to get back into the game in the second half.
MMC could muster just 15 rushing yards on 18 carries against the pesky A-W defense. Utesch led the way with nine hauls for 12 yards.
Neal Bunt led the Eagle defense with 13 tackles, followed by Brady Dalton 10, John Hoefling and Nathan Zubrod eight apiece, Tyler Prunty six, Eli Hohbach and Lee Hueser five each. Specht also had a pass interception for MMC.
Westerner quarterback Chance Klemme completed 12-19 passes for 159 yards, two TDs and one interception. Catching TD passes for A-W were Chet Utesch, and Mitchell Hedlund.
Taylor James led the Westerners' rushing effort with 19 carries for 130 yards, Klemme, Ben Wolthuizen, and Tanner Bundy each scored a rushing TD for the winners.
James also led A-W on defense with 10 tackles, while Daniel Beitelspacher totaled six, and Bundy five.
MMC coach Brad Cave thought his team lacked fire and focus in the 2010 Homecoming game.
Akron-Westfield moves its record to 3-2, and MMC takes its 3-2 record to West Sioux Hawarden Friday night.
