Richard "Dick" Howard, 67, of rural Cherokee, passed away peacefully Friday evening Oct. 8, 2010 surrounded by his family at his farm home southwest of Cherokee.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday,Oct. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Pastor Gregg Johnson officiated. There was a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Visitation was held on Monday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. It was Dick's wishes to be cremated. Dick was born on March 24, 1943 at Oelwein, Iowa to Aaron and Evelyn (Ponsar) Howard. While growing up, he attended rural country school until the 8th grade and then graduated from Sumner High School in 1963. He was married to Susan Meighan in 1963 in Gurnee, Ill. He was later remarried to Deanne Woltman Sievers at Remsen in 1977. He worked for Kirchman Plumbing in Sumner for two years, Young Plumbing and Heating in Oelwein for two years, John Deere in Waterloo for three years, and State Aerial Farm Statistics Inc. as a sales manager for about 40 years in Toledo, Ohio. Due to health reasons, Dick had to retire in October of 2009. He enjoyed training and riding horses while he was growing up, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Twins, and hanging out with his friends and grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in law and father-in-law Edna and Harold Woltman.
He is survived by his wife Deanne; three sons: Dan, Rick and Bob Howard all of Maynard; two step-sons: Tim Sievers and special friend Stephanie of Aurelia; Tracey Sievers of Quimby; four grandchildren: Raquel, Nick, Jessica and Coltin Sievers; one brother: Robert (Susan) Howard of Peosta and their daughters Jill, Kelly and Becky; five brothers-in-law: Doyle (Nancy) Woltman of Cherokee; Merlin (Sue) Woltman of Quimby; Duane Woltman of Cherokee; Lloyd Woltman of Cherokee; Darrell (Lori) Woltman of Aurelia; also several nieces and nephews.
