CALUMET - On Friday, at approximately 6:10 p.m., a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Samuel Kruger of Sibley, was northbound on U.S. Hwy 59 when Kruger's vehicle, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, crossed the center line and collided head-on with the front of a tractor-trailer carrying cattle, that was traveling southbound on the highway.
Kruger did not survive the crash.
The tractor-trailer truck was driven by 28-year-old Lucas Lodermeier of Zearing, and owned by Rick D Reed Trucking, also of Zearing. Authorities said Lodermeier was not injured in the crash.
The Iowa State Patrol reports that Lodermeier's vehicle did try to brake and he steered his vehicle to the right but could not avoid the collision.
The tractor trailer went into the ditch and overturned, dumping out half a load of cattle. The authorities say they recovered most of the cattle, but were unable to locate all of them.
A two-mile stretch of Hwy. 59 was closed for several hours as a result of the accident.
Emergency personnel rerouted traffic through the town of Calumet while authorities investigated the scene of the crash.
The highway was re-opened shortly after 11 p.m. Friday.
